Godric was born in the late 9th century, in south western England near the kingdom of Wessex. The Son of a theghn under King Alfred, Godric’s father drank and
diced his land and fortune away before his death leaving nothing to inherit. Godric’s mother died while Godric was quite young and he was to spend his next few years apprenticed with the local smith, working both iron and glass in the forge. During this time Godric found himself from time to time among the ranks of ceors who would be called to fight off the war bands from the north, during this time Godric came to
envy the life of the Housceorls he would fight along side. They received better food, better war gear and the camaraderie he saw between Theghn and ceor was to be envied. When he was old enough and carried his own shield, seax and spear Godric set out to find a warband willing to welcome him in. Much to his surprise he was not welcomed in with open arms in any band he was able to find. The place of a Housceor was one much coveted and not at all common. Instead he spent a few years offering himself as a smith and warrior to any village who could pay his rate. So playing at the part of a theghn he trained farmers to hold shield and spear, how to form the war hedge and the proper care of weapons. After a few years of fighting and teaching Godric came to realize that he would never see his goal of holding his own land as a theghn teaching farmers the ways of war. So while in York he sought out a band of Danes looking to rebuild their numbers after some successful raids, their wrists were heavy with silver and their war gear was bright, Godric was among them when they sailed off for more raids in the north. After several years of raiding, both good years and bad, Godric and his ship mates found themselves in a storm to end all storms. And while they tried to save them selves and the ship they where dashed onto the rocks of a foreign shore, Godric was the only survivor. Seeking out the local Ealdorman the waterlogged Godric found himself in the Barony of Tarnmist in the Kingdom of the West and offered his services to the local Ealdorman in
exchange for being counted in his warband.
